This is Duncan Reed: independent consulting hydrologist and author of Letters in applied hydrology.

A defining characteristic ... beyond long experience ... is the incisive analysis of data: putting problem before technique, analysis before modelling, and thought before gizmo. UK catchments are exceedingly diverse. If two hydrological problems look the same, you are probably missing something. Additional insight is gained by exploring more than just the obvious datasets.

Hardened by leading the original Flood Estimation Handbook research team at CEH, I retain an appetite for intensive working. Must a deadline force a dull analysis? A tight corner can inspire.
